Community Trap Building Workshop

Saturday 29th of June 2019 at 1pm to 4pm
2706 Coast Road (the small log cabin), Barrytown [map]

Come along to help build/repair 20 predator traps with materials kindly donated by DOC and Predator Free Punakaiki. Bring your kids too if they would like to learn how to build a trap.

The traps will be allocated to willing community members living along the Coast Road of Barrytown flats and those attending the workshop will be given first option to take traps home. These traps are the start of the Coast Road predator trapline from 17 Mile Bluff to the Punakaiki River. Our group Coast Road Dawn Chorus applied to the DOC Community Fund for this trapline in March but we are yet to hear the outcome.

The traps are DOC150 rat/stoat traps housed in wooden boxes to the DOC specification. They are NAWAC (National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee) approved and weka, pet and child safe

We have all the materials to make/repair the boxes but please bring the following tools if you have them: hammer, square head driver, drill and drill bits, handsaw, wire snips, pencil and ruler. We're off the grid, so only bring your hand or battery powered tools (it is largely an assembly job from pre-cut materials).

We'll be working outside and will postpone if wet. Please wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes.

Hope to see many of you there to get these traps fixed up and help our native birds in this mega mast year.

Many thanks
